Toxins to Be Careful of When Trying to Conceive

When clients come to me to improve their Fertility status, one of the many things I look at to help maximise their Fertility is the toxins they are exposed to daily.

When trying to conceive, many factors play a role in fertility, including diet, lifestyle, stress, and environmental influences. One often overlooked factor is toxin exposure. Everyday chemicals found in household products, food, and personal care items can disrupt hormones and negatively impact reproductive health. Understanding which toxins to avoid can help create a healthier environment for conception.

1. Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs)

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals interfere with the body's natural hormone balance, affecting both male and female fertility.

Bisphenol A (BPA) & Phthalates

  • Found in: Plastic containers, canned food linings, receipts, cosmetics, and personal care products.

  • Risks: BPA and phthalates mimic oestrogen, which can lead to hormonal imbalances, lower sperm quality, and difficulty conceiving.

  • How to Avoid: Use glass or stainless-steel containers, choose BPA-free products, and avoid handling thermal paper receipts.

Parabens

  • Found in: Shampoos, lotions, makeup, and skincare products.

  • Risks: These preservatives can mimic oestrogen and have been linked to reproductive toxicity.

  • How to Avoid: Opt for paraben-free cosmetics and personal care items.

2. Heavy Metals

Heavy metals such as lead, mercury, and cadmium can accumulate in the body and interfere with fertility.

Mercury

  • Found in: Large fish (tuna, swordfish, shark), dental fillings, and some vaccines.

  • Risks: Mercury disrupts ovulation and sperm quality.

  • How to Avoid: Limit consumption of high-mercury fish and choose smaller fishlike salmon, sardines, and trout.

Lead

  • Found in: Old pipes, lead-based paints, contaminated soil, and some ceramics.

  • Risks: Lead exposure has been linked to hormonal imbalances, miscarriage, and reduced sperm count.

  • How to Avoid: Test for lead in drinking water and avoid using old, chipped dishware.

3. Pesticides & Herbicides

Pesticides used in agriculture can act as hormone disruptors and have been linked to fertility issues.

  • Found in: Conventionally grown fruits, vegetables, and non-organic animal products.

  • Risks: Pesticide exposure has been associated with lower egg quality, sperm damage, and increased miscarriage risk.

  • How to Avoid: Choose organic produce whenever possible, wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly, and support local, pesticide-free farms.

4. Artificial Fragrances & VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds)

Many cleaning products and air fresheners contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and synthetic fragrances that may disrupt hormones.

  • Found in: Air fresheners, candles, perfumes, household cleaners, and laundry detergents.

  • Risks: Some synthetic fragrances contain phthalates, which can interfere with reproductive hormones.

  • How to Avoid: Use natural essential oils, opt for fragrance-free products, and improve indoor air quality by opening windows and using air purifiers.

5. Processed Foods & Additives

Food additives, artificial sweeteners, and preservatives can negatively impact fertility.

  • Found in: Processed snacks, fast food, sodas, and pre-packaged meals.

  • Risks: Artificial sweeteners like aspartame may affect reproductive hormones, while trans fats can reduce egg and sperm quality.

  • How to Avoid: Eat a whole-food-based diet rich in organic fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and lean proteins.

6. Non-Stick Cookware & Teflon

Cookware coated with perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) can release harmful toxins into food.

  • Found in: Non-stick pans, waterproof clothing, and food packaging.

  • Risks: PFCs have been linked to hormonal imbalances and reduced fertility in both men and women.

  • How to Avoid: Switch to stainless steel, cast iron, or ceramic cookware.

Final Thoughts

Reducing exposure to fertility-harming toxins is a proactive step toward improving reproductive health. While it may not be possible to eliminate all toxins, making small, intentional swaps in food, personal care, and household products can make a significant difference. Prioritize organic and natural alternatives, stay hydrated, and support your body’s natural detoxification through a nutrient-rich diet.
